The Death of Venus
Thousands of eyes are fixed
on every inch of me—
a fleshy goddess in a dated painting,
fallen out of fashion.
I shift around in my frame
and fantasize about flaking away
until I’m nothing but chips of oil paint,
scattered, formless,
Indistinguishable
I am hewn out of heavy marble,
pallid flesh fixed in the eternities.
Desperate, I move to cover my shame
but my arms were stolen long ago
Helpless to even pick up a chisel
and remake myself,
carve away at the stone
into something more worthy
Her eyes are blank,
Blinded by panic.
Is this how Venus felt
when they took her hands?
When she looked in her mirror?
